A little history…
In the
late 1970’s, a group of pastors in Grand Junction
prayed for the establishment of a Christian Radio
station in the Grand Valley. Those prayers were
answered when KJOL went on the air April 24, 1982
under the direction of Pastor Howard Owen and the
Columbus Evangelical Free Church in Grand Junction.
The Church operated KJOL for nearly three years, and
then sold the station to Western Bible College, now
known as Colorado Christian University.
In March
1985 Ken Andrews assumed the position of Station
Manager, and served in that capacity until October
2000. In the 15+ years KJOL was owned by the
University, a great deal of expansion occurred, with
translators added to provide coverage to an area 125
miles in every direction from Grand Junction. In
August, 1995, KDRH, Glenwood Springs went on-air as
a sister station operated from Grand Junction,
simulcasting programming to the Roaring Fork Valley
and the I-70 Corridor.
Over
those years, many fine employees served faithfully
in various capacities and made significant
contributions to the success of the ministry of KJOL
and KDRH. On October 5th, 2000, Colorado
Christian University sold KJOL and KDRH (along with
sister station KWBI, Morrison/Denver) to Educational
Media Foundation of Sacramento (known as KLove.) The
former KJOL and KDRH as well as 18 translators are
now part of the satellite network of KLOVE.
Meantime, through
the cooperative efforts of the owners and management
of MBC Grand Broadcasting and Leggett
Broadcasting in Grand Junction, AM620 was purchased,
a small staff hired and efforts began in mid April
to restore the programming of the former KJOL and
KDRH. KJOL-AM620
became a reality on July 1st, 2001.
In
October of 2004, KDTA, Delta at 1400 AM was added to
the family, simulcasting the programming 24 hours a
day.
What about the
future…
We are
determined to be a powerful vehicle to minister the
Gospel to those on the Western Slope who do not know
Christ personally. We want to be a vital force in
the region to build and nurture the Body of Christ.
That means both individual believers and the
whole Body of Christ. It was the prayer of Jesus
that we “may be one, as we (He and the Father)
are one.” (John 17:11,22) This can be accomplished
only through the energizing power of the Holy
Spirit. And, we WILL have opposition from the
adversary. We need your prayer support!
Tell me about the people…
As
mentioned earlier, the Station Manager is Ken
Andrews, who has completed 28 years in
Christian Radio, 22 of those in Grand Junction.
Previous to entering the ministry of Christian
Radio, he work for several years in a variety of
“secular radio” formats. Ken has been married to his
wife Wendy for over 31 years, and they have four
children: Amy, David, Alisa, and John. When not working,
Ken prefers to be found hunting, competitive
shooting, four-wheeling, or
fly-fishing with his sons.
Kurt
Neuswanger is Music Director, and has sixteen years in Christian Radio,
all at KJOL. He also has many years experience in
“secular radio,” and is a wonderful addition to
local Christian radio. Kurt loves camping, hiking, and his two dogs Domino
and Shadow.
Rhonda
Repshire,
is now a mom of two youngsters, Caleb and
Katie, and continues to bring multiple talents
as a part-time employee these days. She
maintains our satellite systems and on-air
promotions. She is also the athlete of the team.
Literally! She loves sports and officiates
basketball when she gets a chance.
Charlotte
Miller was Secretary/Receptionist of the former KJOL
and KDRH for 3 ½ years before coming on staff at the
new KJOL. She has been a critical part of the team
in organizing the office and business of the new
KJOL. Having raised five children with her husband
Glen, Charlotte enjoys grandchildren, assisting all
kinds of ministry and planning weddings.
Sharon
Dry started working for KJOL in July 2002 as
Secretary/Receptionist, and loves serving the Lord
and others in that capacity. Sharon and her
husband Ed have three adult children, one
grandchild, and yet another on the way. When
she's not working, she loves helping out with MOPS
at church, reading Christian fiction, going to yard
sales, crafts, and working in her yard. She
says she "loves being on the Road Less Traveled
with her Lord."
Dave
Andrews is 28 years old, single, and holds a
bachelors degree in International Studies.
Dave enjoys hunting, fishing, watching movies,
coaching the Grand Valley Marksmen shooting team, and
shooting competitive pistol with his dad (that's
right- he is Ken Andrews' son). You can hear
him weekday mornings, as well as on
"Accent" at 6:30am, 2:30pm, and
5:45pm.
Carla
Johnson is our newest full-time employee at
KJOL. Carla began her broadcasting career in
1988 at the U.S. Army Defense Information School at
Fort Ben Harrison, IN.
She’s worked in Christian and secular media
– including KWBI, the “big sister” station in
the former Colorado Christian University Radio
Network. Carla
holds a B.A. in Biblical Studies from CCU.
She and her husband are the busy parents of a
pre-teenaged son, who’s been hopelessly spoiled by
his grandparents!
II Timothy 2:20-21 is her life’s challenge
to be “useful to the Master.”
As you
can see, KJOL is a small, "down home" operation. As you travel around
this site, you can learn more about our services and
opportunities for ministry. Do keep us in your
prayers – and be listening for more from local
Christian Radio for the Western Slope...KJOL- 620 & 1400!
