Thirty years ago, Mary Lowry wrote “Mary did you Know” and it has been a hit ever since. Buddy Greene wrote the music while the two of them were touring with the Gaithers. The song asks, rhetorically, "Mary did you know your baby boy would one day walk on water, that the child you delivered would soon deliver you?"
But theologians and armchair critics have noted that yes, Mary did know that her baby boy would be the Messiah—even if she didn’t know specifically that he would walk on water.
Mark Lowry says the song came about as he was discussing with his mother what it must have been like to raise the son of God. Did Mary ever have to tell him to clean up his room? he wondered (because that’s the way comedians think).
But Lowry is good natured about the criticism. He says the last thing he ever wanted to do was insult Mary or anger his fellow believers. “I hope the song sends people running to Luke to find out what Mary knew!”
And that’s a very good place to start!
