Maverick City Music made a bit of history Sunday night as the first Christian group to perform on stage at the Grammy Awards in 20 years.
Maverick City Music is a multi-cultural collaboration of musicians based in Atlanta. Last year they teamed with Elevation Worship and recorded an album called Old Church Basement. (KJOL is currently playing their song “Million Little Miracles.”)
Maverick City performed the song “Jireh” which has 66 million views on Youtube.
The last time a Christian group sang at the Grammys was 2002, featuring CeCe Winans and Hezekiah Walker. However, in 2017, Chance the Rapper—who is a professing Christian—sang the Chris Tomlin song “How Great Is Our God” with a full gospel choir.
In 1980, Andrae Crouch and Mighty Clouds of Joy performed “Jesus Is Lord” (which is possibly the first and last time those words have been uttered at the Grammys!).
Michael W. Smith and Amy Grant have 33 Grammy nominations and 9 Grammy awards between them, but neither artist has ever been invited to perform--for better or worse.
