Last year around this time, Tina Snover from Fellowship of Christian Athletes, remarked to us that the devil was having a heyday sowing fear around the world (that’s the real source of fear). The rest of the year proved her right, and has over and over from the top down. We have all seen the COVID scared faces in the grocery store; and lest we think Christians are any different, there are still plenty of churches with closed doors in our community, and people who still haven’t gone back to them.
At the very least, fear is NOT revival. And chances are, if you are breathing, Christian or not, you are likely afraid of something. For me, I can honestly say I am not afraid of COVID and would be perfectly happy giving hugs, high-fives, shaking hands, and being annoying as usual. I am also usually a pretty secure guy, not worrying much about what others think (just look at how I dress hahaha). I am not too concerned even about death, as I really look forward to Heaven. But my son Elias asked me a question with stars in his eyes a few days ago, “daddy, are you scared of anything?” I said quickly and quite honestly “my kids getting hurt.” I didn’t have to even think about that that one.
So we all have it. What I want to know (as a man), is what can we do to fix it. Here’s the answer: go to Heaven. I say that with a chuckle, because perhaps it will never be fully solved on this earth; and we are to live courageously anyway (in spite of fear). BUT don’t worry, I am not going to leave you there…God’s Word has some words of reassurance for us in this
life too.
In a few days on the Bible Quiz, we will be covering 2 Timothy 1:7:
“For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” (KJV)
Instead of “sound mind,” the New American Standard version simply calls it “discipline.” One of the interesting things about being a human, which we often ignore, is that we are capable of changing our mind. When it comes to a “sound mind,” discipline very much comes into play. Fear and worry is not useful, so we rebuke, refocus, and remap .
“Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things. The things which you learned and received and heard and saw in me, these do, and the God of peace will be with you.” Philippians 4:8-9
Now this is where I break in and say that without a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, 2 Timothy 1:7’s “power” and “love,” cannot come fully into play. So seeking Christ for remission of sins and placing your faith in Him is essential (the Good News is you can take care of that today). Here’s the reason I made such a bold statement.
God’s love (real love) is a Fruit of the Spirit, and you must first know Christ to enjoy the benefits of the Holy Spirit. Also, His power and love are gifts to His people. For those of us who do know Jesus and have a relationship with Him, we know that perfect love (a Fruit of the Spirit) drives away fear; and power comes through the supernatural tools (the Armor of God) to take a stand against the schemes of the devil.
There is one more aspect to this that I want to mention, and that is trust. When I think of that which I fear the most, my kids getting hurt, I try to refocus on my trust in Christ, that He is in control, He is with us, that He will care
for them better than I can to a ripe old age, and that our ultimate goal is to be together one day soon in God’s Kingdom…that place where sin, hurt, and death
will no longer have a hold.
So what does all of this disguising fear
talk have to do with revival? Spiritual warfare. As Christians, the devil keeps us busy and ineffective with fear, focused on self, rather than God’s Kingdom. It is a hurdle standing in the way of revival; and it has been used effectively by the enemy for a very long time. The evil one doesn’t want us to take a stand in opposition to your own sin, or the sin of the day, to be a real disciple of Christ, or to tell others about Christ…he wants you to be scared.
